Many policies related to the criminal legal system and practices employed in prisons have a profound impact on health. However, health care professionals are rarely consulted to weigh in about these policies or practices.
Amend works with states throughout the U.S. to bring a critical healthcare perspective to policies and practices that affect people in the criminal legal system – with a focus on people who are incarcerated – such as compassionate release/medical parole programs and the need to end the practice of solitary confinement for its serious adverse effects on health.
We also consult on state and federal legislation and serve as subject-matter experts for media outlets.
